Maria Leyba
Maria Leyba began writing seriously about 10 years ago. Her poetry and literary work springs from the pain and struggles of being Chicana living in poverty in the barrio of Barelas. As a child she lived in the New Mexico State Penitentiary, where her father was a prison cook. Maria works as a preschool teacher with very young children and also with at-risk youths, incarcerated youths, abused women and women in transition. She has been published in many anthologies and has performed her poetry statewide.
